These wind farms — Impofu East, Impofu West, and Impofu North — will collectively generate 330 MW of power upon completion in 2026. The projects will feature a total of 57 turbines, eight high-voltage substations, and approximately 120 kilometres of 132kV high-voltage overhead transmission lines.
Once operational, the wind farms will deliver clean energy to Sasol’s Secunda synthetic fuel plant in Mpumalanga. In addition, the projects will supply electricity to Air Liquide’s Secunda oxygen production facility, the world’s largest of its kind.
The Projects are an important milestone in line with South Africa’s commitment to a sustainable energy future, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and promoting the adoption of renewable energy solutions. The Impofu Cluster projects embody the principles of Environmental and Social Governance (ESG), contributing to the global goal of mitigating climate change and reducing carbon footprints.
The sustainable practices to be adopted for these projects and the impact they shall have on the environment include:
(a) Providing a renewable energy source, thereby significantly reducing CO2 emissions;
(b) Supporting local economic development through job creation and investment in infrastructure; and
(c) Strengthening energy security for critical industrial operations in the region.
