E-methane, or synthetic methane, is poised to become the world’s go-to synthetic gas as its production process utilizes low-emission hydrogen and a carbon source, such as CO2, which can be directly added to existing gas networks. This assists in a clean energy transition without the need for costly investments to build brand-new delivery infrastructure.
Additionally, e-methane can act to bridge today’s methane networks with a future hydrogen system and provide increased storage and transport potential consistent with hydrogen sector plans. Not to mention, it can be used in areas with no current storage (e.g., not enough seabed storage) for hydrogen production and can be stored in current infrastructure for seasonal energy demand fluctuations.
The potential cost benefits are large, allowing the energy to be optimal for hydrogen usage.
Countries have already begun experimenting with e-methane, with Japan emerging as a leading proponent. The country has set an ambitious target: by 2050, 90% of city gas demand is expected to be met by e-methane.
